The ongoing elections for the National Coordination Council of USA during June 4-9, 2014 are historic in many ways. For the first time, we are having an one person one vote system where everyone has an opportunity to cast his/her ballot electronically from where they live. Second, an unprecedented energy of the NRNs has been unleashed where 52 candidates are vying for the 23 positions. Third, the candidates are represented from many parts of the country, whereas traditionally, only the leaders from the East Coast had dominated the NCC Board.
To make such an open and professional election possible, many people worked very hard and pushed through many obstacles. The declaration of the open elections is already a victory for everyone.
The professionalism of the by-laws revision committee, the election committee, the membership verification committee has been outstanding. Chief Election Commissioner Mr. Binod Roka, By-laws amendment committee chair Mr. Durga Bhurtel and the membership verification committee which included Mr. Shekhar Dhungel and Mr. Anjan Shrestha performed a highly professional job to help the organizations ready for an open election. We all expect the election commission will successfully complete its job.
The ICC leadership in North America led by Nabaraj Gurung and Sonam Lama, the ICC advisors in North America, the ICC members in the US and the other leaders of the NRN community all played positive role in helping prepare for the upcoming elections. The Global ICC leadership led by President Ghale has consistently supported the NRN leaders and activist in the US to go for an open election.
After the elections, the NCC board will gain full legitimacy, and will also prepare our representatives for some potential global leadership position. A strong NCC Board in the USA is also important to promote NRNA agenda in Nepal and globally, and a democratically elected board will truly represent the spirit of this great democratic country.
Most importantly, the membership in the NRN NCC of US has grown dramatically by more than 1,200 percent, and the NRN mission is now solidly embedded in the grassroots NRN community. The spectacular energy exhibited by the candidates and their interest in serving in the board, and the interest shown by the media and the NRN community all have made the US NRN affairs richer, and the global community is watching us with interest. I am sure meritocracy will win, and the elected leaders will take the NCC to the right direction and to newer heights.
